Dr. Loniewski completed his residency through Michigan State University in Orthopedic Surgery, graduating with multiple research honors including the Andrew Taylor Still and Alvin Yarrow awards as well as the AOA Burroughs-Wellcome Research Fellowship. He completed a full year fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at the University of Chicago Hospitals with Dr. Henry Finn. He has extensive experience with regenerative medicine techniques since 1996,and has been a consultant for orthopedic biologic companies such as Eli Lilly, Biomet/Zimmer, Celling Biosciences and AVM Biotechnology. He has worked with some top researchers in stem cell therapy such as Philippe Hernigou, MD of the University of Paris and Theresa Deisher, P.hD. of AVM Biotechnology . Dr. Loniewski has developed bone marrow protocols and videos for avascular necrosis of the hip as well as subchondroplasty of the knee.
Dr. Loniewski has been active in advancing the area of regenerative medicine in his practice since 2005. He was the first orthopedic surgeon in the area to use cell-based therapy such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) to help patients recover from joint replacement surgery. These are specific regenerative cells found within the patient’s own body. He presented his research results to the Michigan Orthopedic Society revealing how patients receiving this treatment reduced their need for pain medications, transfusions and the need for further surgery. He also presented a unique study utilizing platelet rich plasma (PRP) with arthroscopic surgery. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Loniewski has tried to advance this area of medicine. He has been a member of such research societies such as the International Cartilage Research Society (ICRS) and the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) Through constant and continuing education supported by these organizations, Dr. Loniewski has been able to provide his patients with safe, effective and ethical cell based therapies to help restore patients to an active lifestyle with reduced pain and increased function. Not all patients will respond to these therapies, and his training has helped identify the most appropriate patient for these state of the art therapies. Some therapies such as platelet rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow concentrate (BMC) and adipose derived stem cell (ADSC) can be effective in reducing the symptoms of arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis with little to no adverse events since this is therapy derived from the patient’s own body. Since 2005, he has treated thousands of patients with platelet rich plasma (PRP), and he was one of the first surgeons in the Midwest to offer adipose derived stem cell treatments for knee and hip arthritis in 2013. With very careful follow up and evaluations, he has been able to help patients avoid joint replacement and arthroscopic surgeries. However, this is not for every patient, and Dr. Loniewski can provide you with a comprehensive evaluation explaining the risks and benefits of these experimental treatments. Dr. Loniewski has also developed a well-referenced presentation reviewing your options for arthritis which can be downloaded here:<link to options for your arthritis>
