While most institutes of modern medicine have forgotten their roots in the healing arts, we have not. Thousands of years ago, medicine men and healers always started the process with deep and prolonged prayer. The oldest recorded prescriptions of the Egyptian physician and god, Imhotep included prayer as a vital part of the healing process. This was reinforced by the father of modern medicine Hippocrates when he wrote "Prayer indeed is good" but he is later quoted "but while calling on the gods, a man himself should lend a hand." Thus we need to remind ourselves that our creation starts from a helpful, loving Creator, but as my mother always said "God helps those who help themselves." Keeping with these recommendations, simple prayer aligns us with the logic of the great minds of the past, as well as our mother's modern wisdom. We have to participate in the healing process, and prayer is the first basic step on this journey. Please join us, and take this first step to keep this tradition alive.
A very simple, traditional and powerful prayer used by hundreds of thousands of faithful people throughout the world everyday reads:
Heavenly Father, I call on You right now in a special way. It is through Your power that I was created. Every breath I take , every morning I wake and every moment of every hour, I live under Your power.
Father, I ask You now to touch me with that same power. For, if You created me from nothing, You can certainly recreate me. Fill me with the healing power of Your Spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any unproductive cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins, and rebuild any damaged areas. Remove all inflammation, and cleanse any infection.
Let the warmth of Your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way You created it to function. And Father, restore Me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life.
I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The powerful healing prayer above is always recommended as a great starting point. However, prayer is also helpful when you have others pray for you. This form of intercessory prayer brings others into the healing process, and is highly encouraged. Do not be afraid to ask your family, friends, co-workers, physician and staff to pray for you. This is something I personally enjoy. It is an effective treatment that has no side effects; no cost ; no paperwork; no pre-authorizations, no waiting in paper gowns; and builds a wonderful relationship between everyone involved. In fact, it's the best part of medicine.
Another great book by a local, Brighton author, Fr. Mathias Thelen called Biblical Foundations for the Role of Healing in the New Evangelization is available at fine on-line and brick and mortar book stores everywhere. This book provides a great background of healing and faith and is a very quick enjoyable read.
