What is a D.O.?
People ask me what are those letters after your name? D.O. and FACOS and FAOAO . The D.O. stands for Doctor of Osteopathy. Only two forms of medical training are licensed to provide medical and surgical care in the US. Doctors of Osteopathy( D.O.) and Medical Doctors (M.D.). Osteopathy is a form of medicine based on specific philosophy of diagnosing and treating patients. The two basic differences are that Osteopaths focus on a holistic view of your health including your social setting, nutrition, and a structural exam. The second difference is a strong emphasis on the musculoskeletal system and its relationship to health and disease. Osteopaths were the ones who invented spinal manipulation which was adapted by chiropractors. Although medical doctors and osteopaths have the same basic training requirements and certification process, Osteopaths take an average extra 500 hours of training in the musculoskeletal exam and treatment. So, the big difference for Osteopaths is that we look at the whole person and can use our hands to help diagnose and treat.
The FACOS and FAOAO are a designation on a nomination and election into a fellowship of surgeons. This honor is given by nomination after significant contributions to the profession. Participation in research, training, professional and community service are all compiled for nomination and acceptance. These are designations awarded by your peer reviewed board and are a lifetime designation.
