Three Ways to Protect Your Shelter in Place from COVID-19

Everyone may be wondering what they can do to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  We have great social distancing guidelines, but what about your own home? What can someone do within the confines of their “shelter in place” to avoid a viral infection.  Here are three simple things you can do now to prevent the spread and protect your loved ones.

Use Zinc- Most people can be zinc deficient without any symptoms.  The World Health Organization states that zinc deficiency is the 5th leading cause of death internationally. In addition,16% of all lower respiratory infections worldwide are due to zinc deficiencies.   The minimal recommended dose of zinc per day is 11 mg for males and 8 mg for females. Foods such as oysters, red meat, beans and fortified cereals are good sources of zinc. Most people can obtain the minimal dosing through a multivitamin.  Studies from the Cleveland Clinic show that taking zinc lozenges every 2 hrs reduces the length of cold symptoms. Simple lozenges such as Cold Eze can work, but they should not be used for over 2 weeks because each lozenge contains about 12 mg and overdosing can occur.  Since it may be inconvenient and even risky to take these lozenges, you may want to consider a long lasting 12 hr activated zinc mouthwash such as Smart Mouth. There have never been any studies evaluating the therapeutic benefits of this product for viral infections but other studies on antiseptic mouthwashes have shown some short lived benefit of reducing the amount of viral concentrations.

Get Sunshine-  A recent study from Stanford showed that COVID-19 is susceptible to UV light and only 10 minutes of exposure significantly reduced the number of viral particles. So find the area of your home with the most sun exposure (usually the Northern exposure in the winter) and set up some chairs or tables and lay out bedding, pillows, mattress pads etc for a through exposure to some sunshine at the sunniest time of the day (usually 3-5 pm)

Get Warm-  The same study showed that just a 5 degree celsius increase ( about 9-10 degrees fahrenheit ) reduced the number of COVID-19 viruses by one log.   So, warming up things by throwing them into the dryer or setting things on a porch near a brick wall will increase the temperature and also reflect Ultraviolet from the sun on to the items to decontaminate.

If you are wondering what you can do as your part to fight COVID-19 within the confines of your own “shelter in place” do something safe, simple and inexpensive.   Take zinc, get some sun exposure on critical sleepwear and heat them up just about 10 degrees.   Be smart and do your part..zinc, sun and heat!

May God Bless and Protect Your Home
